We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced software engineers with strong backgrounds in backend systems, infrastructure, developer tooling, and high-impact technical problem-solving.

This role supports an exciting collaboration with a leading frontier AI research laboratory focused on improving internal tooling, infrastructure reliability, developer workflows, and engineering velocity across foundational systems.

Selected professionals will work across key infrastructure and developer experience initiatives, helping build scalable systems, improve CI reliability, standardise infrastructure practices, enhance tooling usability, and support IT systems and provisioning workflows. This opportunity is especially well-suited to engineers with strong Python proficiency, systems thinking, and hands-on experience across infrastructure, CI/CD, developer platforms, or Infrastructure-as-Code environments.

Key Responsibilities

Professionals in this role may contribute to:

Developer Experience & CI Reliability
Improve CI performance, reliability, and observability
Build runner autoscaling and system hardening
Implement alerting and notification systems
Increase visibility into CI pipelines and failure patterns

CLI Tooling & Engineering Productivity
Enhance CLI usability and discoverability
Build telemetry, observability, and performance improvements for CLI tools
Improve SDK and shared library ergonomics, including stable APIs, versioning, and templates
Develop tooling insights such as usage visibility and workflow understanding

IT Systems, SaaS & Provisioning Workflows
Manage and optimize SaaS tools and configurations
Build systems for procurement intake and vendor inventory
Implement and maintain Google Workspace administration, SAML-based SSO, and SCIM provisioning with RBAC controls
Help improve structured internal systems that support scale and operational consistency

Infrastructure-as-Code & Paved Roads
Build reusable Pulumi modules and service templates
Standardise baseline infrastructure stacks including logging, monitoring, tagging, and budgets
Reduce drift and repetitive infrastructure patterns
Add safety checks and guardrails for faster, safer deployments

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:
Strong proficiency in Python
Experience with backend systems, infrastructure, or developer tooling
Familiarity with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions, Buildkite, or similar platforms
Familiarity with CLI tooling, developer platforms, SaaS and IT systems, or Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Pulumi or Terraform
Strong problem-solving ability and systems thinking
The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment

Preferred qualifications

Experience improving developer experience across CI, internal tooling, or infrastructure workflows
Familiarity with identity systems, SSO, provisioning, and access control frameworks
Experience building reusable infrastructure modules and standardised engineering templates
Ability to contribute across cross-functional engineering systems with strong ownership and technical judgment

Contract Details

Independent contractor role
Fully remote with flexible scheduling
Hourly compensation of $160–$180 per hour
Expected commitment of approximately 20 hours per week
Must be available for 2 × 45-minute syncs weekly
Syncs are scheduled during PST work hours on Monday and Thursday
Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on project needs and performance
Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
